Turkey — Still Uncivilized?

15 Dec 2005

Prosecuting Orhan Pamuk, simply for writing his opinions about Turkey, proves that they don't yet belong In the European Union.

A country that allows religious fanatics to oppress their citizens can never belong in a progressive, free society.

It's not really their fault.  People that have never enjoyed true freedom can't understand the concept of people having the right to express their own thoughts.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Iraq accepted the idea of freedom first?

A Turkish court on Monday dropped charges against the country's best-known novelist for insulting "Turkishness," ending a high-profile trial that outraged Western observers and cast doubt on Turkey's commitment to free speech.

. . . . . . .

Dozens of people in Turkey still face charges similar to Pamuk's.

Apparently, enough people raised hell, but are they really going to make enough major changes?

We'll see . . .
