Some colleges and owners of professional teams tell their players that they don't put their names on their jerseys because they want to instill team spirit rather than focus on individuals. The truth is: 1. It's cheaper. 2. They want to sell programs at the game. 3. They don't want the players to build name recognition because a player with national name recognition will get the most attention and the better offers. 4. They don't care about the fans. The players should realize that they are being cheated out of valuable national attention, diminishing their worth. It has been estimated that a college player could lose almost half of their lifetime earnings if they always play on teams that leave off their name. But why bring it up? I'm sure that college men are smart enough to figure this out for themselves. Ironically, the professional athletes, their agents, and the media don't seem smart enough to realize this obvious fact. I don't know how much this affects TV ratings. I do know that I rarely watch a game if the player's names aren't on their jerseys. I simply don't recognize people by numbers on their backs or tattooed on their wrist. When they build actual robots to play these games, they will surely put names on their backs. |
