The war in Iraq has never been about WMD's or oil. We knew that they didn't have the weapons. And we could have gotten the oil at any time by agreeing to relax the sanctions. Saddam was a thug that used his image of strength to intimidate his neighbors and his people. He couldn't bring himself to admit that he didn't have the weapons. That's what we were counting on. Taking down the Taliban just wasn't enough to show our enemies that we would retaliate overwhelmingly against anyone that dared attack us. We had to take down someone with enough power to demonstrate our might. Iraq won the coin toss. The Iraqis also won something that they had no hope of ever achieving; a semblance of freedom. |
