Decent people never want to kill anyone, but there is a reality. We don't yet know how to cure a criminal's mind. Should we spend our energies keeping a criminal alive, or should our energies go to the truly needy, decent people? For every criminal that you keep alive for an estimated $35,000 a year, 1000 needy people could be supplied with food. What kind of person chooses the criminal? I would make it a simple vote on tax returns. Those that are against capital punishment can chose to pay for the criminal's upkeep. They will all be sent a tax bill annually to pay for their share of supporting the criminals. Those that chose not to pay for the criminals simply don't have to. Their choice would be considered a vote for capital punishment. It is just too easy to be magnanimous when one gets someone else to pay for it. |
