The Plump, Starving People of Africa

It's not really unusual for the parents to be healthy while their children starve to death.

It is a natural instinct of all animals to survive, even at the expense of their offspring.

The reason: If the parents die, their babies die. The parents can make more babies, but the babies will surely die (or be eaten) if the parents die.

I saw a newscast on TV from a poor country in Africa. The parents were not only healthy, but they were well dressed! None had on old, raggedy clothes. They all wore bright new clothes, while their children were naked and starving.

Shouldn't someone point it out to them that humans are supposed to strive to rise a little bit above the animal level.

I know that they are in need, but until I see some effort on their part, I'll look elsewhere for the needy that are trying to help themselves. Is that not what we were taught?
